ECONOMIC & EMPLOYMENT NEWS

  • The Hottest Job Market in a Generation is Over
    • “Americans’ once-in-a-generation job market has come to an end. The red-hot hiring and rock-bottom unemployment that helped millions of workers find new gigs, boost their wages and reinvent their careers are giving way to more prosaic times. While the market is still healthy by many measures, signs of difficulty are creeping in.” (The Wall Street Journal)
  • I Changed My Mind. the Fed Needs to Cut Rates Now
    • “I’ve long been in the “higher for longer” camp, insisting that the US Federal Reserve must hold short-term interest rates at the current level or higher to get inflation under control. The facts have changed, so I’ve changed my mind. The Fed should cut, preferably at next week’s policy-making meeting.” (Bill Dudley, Bloomberg)
  • Powell Signals Rate Cut Coming Into View but Declines to Say When
    • “Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell declined to change expectations Monday that the central bank would hold interest rates steady at its meeting in two weeks as officials look ahead toward potential rate cuts after that. But Powell declined to say whether that would justify lowering interest rates at policymakers’ meeting later this month, on July 30-31. Investors broadly expect the central bank to start reducing rates at its following gathering in September.” (Wall Street Journal)
  • Prices Fell in June for the First Time Since the Start of the Pandemic
    • “The Consumer Price Index, a measurement of the average change in prices for a commonly purchased basket of goods and services, dropped 0.1% from May, which helped to slow the annual rate of inflation to 3% from 3.3% in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest report.” (CNN)
